Deep tissue massage setting at Spa Chevy Chase in Chevy Chase, Maryland

Firm bodywork at Spa Chevy Chase

Deep tissue massage

Deep tissue is the appointment people book when something specific hurts. It works best when you can say where, and for how long.

Your appointment

Give your skin the time to be understood

The appointment leaves room to discuss your goals, your current routine, sensitivity and any recent treatments before it begins. Your provider can explain the steps and say whether this is the right fit today.

Deep tissue massage setting at Spa Chevy Chase in Chevy Chase, Maryland

Before the first appointment

Spa Chevy Chase is at 4500 N Park Avenue in Chevy Chase, Maryland, near the DC line. People come from across Montgomery County and Northwest DC, and a good number arrive because something has been bothering them for weeks.

The most useful thing you can bring is specificity. "My right shoulder, worse in the mornings, for about two months, since I changed desks" gives the therapist more to work with than "tension".

What deep tissue actually means

Slower strokes and firmer pressure, working into the deeper layers of muscle and the tissue around it. Four lengths are offered, from 60 to 120 minutes; longer appointments cover more of the body rather than pressing harder.

It can be uncomfortable in places and it should never be unbearable. Pressure that makes you hold your breath is too much, and saying so is not being difficult — it is how the therapist calibrates.

Bring specifics

Which side, how long, and what set it off. It beats the word tension.

Pressure you can breathe through

A better guide than a number out of ten.

60 to 120 minutes

Longer covers more of the body; it does not press harder.

Good to know

Common questions

Will I be sore afterwards?

Often mildly, for a day or two, in the way you might be after unfamiliar exercise.

Severe or lasting pain is not expected. If that happens, tell us.

How much pressure should I ask for?

As much as you can breathe normally through. That is a better guide than a number out of ten.

Which length should I book?

60 minutes for one or two areas. 90 or 120 if you want the whole back, neck and legs addressed properly.

How long is the drive from Kensington?

About fifteen minutes outside the peaks. Connecticut Avenue at five is the part to plan around.

How sore is normal?

A day of feeling worked-on is common; sharp pain is not. If something hurts sharply during the appointment, say so then rather than afterwards.

What can I do if I am sore the next day?

Move gently and keep warm. If it lasts beyond a couple of days, call and say so — that is useful information for your next appointment.

How do I describe the pressure I want?

Describe the effect rather than a number: whether you want it to reach the muscle or stay above it. Numbers out of ten mean different things to different people.

Can I change the pressure partway through?

Yes, and you should. Adjusting takes a second and the provider would rather know at the time.

Which length should I pick for one problem area?

A shorter appointment is enough for one area. Longer appointments make sense when there are several, not when there is one you want done harder.

Is it better to book longer and cover more?

Only if there is more to cover. Say what you want dealt with and let your provider tell you what fits.

Should I book before or after training?

After, with a day's gap if you can. A deep appointment the evening before a hard session is not the arrangement most people prefer.

Can I shower afterwards?

Yes. Warm rather than very hot is the more comfortable choice.

What should I tell the provider at the start?

Where it is, how long it has been there, what makes it worse, and anything a doctor has said about it.

What if it turns out to be an injury?

Your provider will say so and suggest you have it looked at. Massage is not the answer to everything and they will tell you when it is not.

Is there parking?

Yes, on site. Allow a couple of minutes for it in your timing.

Can I book the same provider next time?

Ask for them when you book. Notes carry over either way, but continuity helps with an area you are working on over time.

Should I drink water afterwards?

Drink normally. There is nothing special to do.

How often do people come back?

It depends what they are managing. Your provider will suggest an interval once they know what they are working with.

What if I want it lighter than I asked for?

Say so. Changing down mid-appointment is as normal as changing up.

How do I book from Kensington?

Through the button on this page. Fifteen minutes each way outside the peaks, so a weekday evening slot is straightforward.
